Plans for a new Home.
My thinking is starting to shift from purging to buying: I need to find an RV… in essence I need to buy a home. I’ve almost saved up enough to start looking at the bottom of my price range, and I think that I’m going to need a ton of time to find the right camper.
My plans are to get a class B motorhome. I chose this class because I need some room: I’ll be taking my 2 cats with me, and building out a small workshop. The class B is the smallest motorhome short of a true conversion van, basically a small studio apartment on wheels.I chose this because:
-They’re legal to drive like any car, and park on any street a car could park on, so I’ll be able to sleep at truck stops and in parking lots fairly easily.
- They’re self contained, and with the addition of solar will make for a fairly comfortable living space even when not plugged in. I’m not looking to be super stealth, and I’ll be working on the road, so a bit of space and comforts like water tanks and a toilet will be nice.
-I’m planning to go with a Toyota or VW-based Winnebago mode, which will be good on gas: between 14-18mpg.
-The size is pretty much perfect. For 2 years up until this past September, I started and operated my business out of a 9 foot square bedroom that I also slept in and completed a design degree in, so I’m used to super super small spaces. 8x14 is just enough space to be comfortable when it matters, and to want to be outside when it doesn’t.
I have a bit of experience with car interiors, so I plan to build out the RV simply (and on a very small budget) with about 200 watts solar, a couple deep cycle batteries, and a Norcold solar fridge. I’ll get rid of the stove and microwave for space, and use a 2 burner cooktop. I plan to do a workbench in the living area, which will double as a dining room table/workspace for computer/photos/video.
Ultimately, I’m really excited to be one complete mobile unit, with everything I own under one…well…roof, I guess, but I think it’s probably sheet metal or aluminum. I’m excited to take up less space, and hopefully live wherever I decide to go simply and at a low cost. I think I’m most excited about learning to build the solar “system”, because that’ll be really nice to be off the grid in that respect.
Coming soon: Budgets, Diets, and more things other than Purging!
